• He was a partner in 1862-1863 with Charles Perkins Starr in Akron OH as STARR & ACKLEY.

• He worked circa 1864-1865 as a jeweler and watchmaker in Akron OH from a shop on the south side of Market between Howard and Canal. He sold out to James Bangs Storer.

• He worked circa 1865-1869 as a jeweler in Saginaw, Saginaw, MI with a shop at 102 South Water Street. By 1869, he had changed trades, becoming manager of the Western Union Telegraph.
