- His obituary was published in the Boston Daily Journal on 1 Aug 1898 in Boston MA. John Federhen, one of the oldest and wealthiest citizens of Quincy, died at his home in that city Saturday [July 30, 1898] in his 86th year.
He was born in Boston, Aug. 31, 1812, but had beem a resident in Quincy for 30 years. He established himself in business in Boston at the age of 18 years by opening a shell and comb store on Washington Street near the site of the Adams House. He afterward removed to Court Street, where he conducted a jewelry business for half a century, taking his sons into the firm of John Federhen & Sons.
The business thriving, the firm also opened branch stores under the old Tremont Temple and at Washington and Bromfield Streets. Mr. Federhen was also largely interested in Boston realty, and about a year ago he closed out his jewelry business that he might devote his time to caring for his real estate, and opened an office at 28 Court Street.
He was endowed with a remarkably vigorous constitution, and up to last October he was a daily visitor to the Boston office, and it was his boast that he had never lost a day's time from his business by sickness.
At the time of Lafayette's visit in 1825, as a Boston schoolboy Mr. Federhen was one of those who were present to welcome the distinguished Frenchman.
Mr. Federhen was one of the few left of the old-time Boston business men, and was probably one of the best known of the old-timers.
John married Dorothy Dearborn Underhill on 16 Feb 1831 in Boston MA. (Dorothy Dearborn Underhill was born on 14 Jan 1808 in Chester NH, died on 11 Sep 1892 in Boston MA and was buried in Boston MA.)
